Dear [Education policymaker]:
In his 1971 book, Slaughter of the Innocents, Dr. David Bakan writes:
“...The buttocks are the locus for the induction of pain in a child. We are familiar with the argument that it is a safe ‘locus’ for spanking. However, the anal region is also the major erotic region at precisely the time the child is likely to be beaten there. Thus it is aptly chosen to achieve the result of deranged sexuality in adulthood...” (p. 113)Subsequent research and the long list of court cases concerning sexual predation against children confirm the correctness (and importance) of Dr. Bakan’s observation. Not only are spanked children victimized in the first instance, and thus rendered more vulnerable to victimization by others, but some are destined to become victimizers themselves. Many will become parents. Some will become teachers or enter other child-related professions where they will spawn the next generation of victims.
In light of the above, what assurances can you give that school paddlings a) aren’t merely a cover for sexual predation, and b) pose no risk of causing psychological damage to paddled children?
And what advice do you have for parents who wisely have trained their children to resist any unwelcome tactile activity by adults involving the “bathing suit area” but discover that a very different standard applies in schools? How do you advise them to explain that discrepancy to their child?
And, finally, what position will your office take when lawsuits are filed in which the plaintiffs allege that their deranged sexuality stems from buttocks battering they received when they were enrolled in the schools of your state?
