Hazing violence puts five in hospital

Princess Anne-- Five students at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore were beaten so severely with wooden paddles and canes during a two-month fraternity initiation they had to be hospitalized, state police said Monday.

Some of the pledges of Kappa Alpha Psi underwent surgery last week for cuts and infections on their buttocks from being spanked daily from Feb. 8 to April 4, police and family members said.

No arrests have been made.

The university on Monday suspended Kappa Alpha Psi, canceling all fraternity activities until the investigation is complete.
