A Bryan [Texas] woman faces up to two years in prison after a jury convicted her of reckless injury to a child for beating her 6-year-old son during a spanking.

Twenty-six-year-old Shanetta Richardson was convicted yesterday and will be sentenced next month.

Richardson testified that she used a leather belt in January 2002 to discipline her son after he ripped in half his brother's baptism certificate. She says she didn't think the punishment was unreasonable.

Sul Ross Elementary School employees noticed bruises, welts and lacerations on the boy's arms, legs, chest and back and notified authorities.

Defense attorney Kirby Taylor says his client did not beat her son and that she was spanking him to teach him between right and wrong.
