Corporal Punishment -- Letter to Editor, KTHV-DT, Little Rock
By Jordan Riak
April 5, 2004

Editor:

Corporal punishment does for a child’s education exactly what wife beating does for a marriage. It is the tool of choice among educators who have nothing better to offer. It requires no thinking, no training, no understanding of children, just superior size. If corporal punishment were a legitimate part of teaching methodology, then teachers’ colleges would instruct undergraduates how to do it. They don’t. If it worked as its users claim, then states and school districts with the highest paddling rates would achieve the highest educational standards. They don’t.

Sincerely,

Jordan Riak, Executive Director
