A spanking idea

Ron Goldman is hoping the town will take a stand against the use of corporal punishment for children. Goldman, who has a doctorate in psychology, has submitted a warrant article to be voted on at the June Town Meeting urging parents and caregivers to reject the use of corporal punishment in favor of alternative means of discipline. "It came about because of my personal interest in advocating for children," said Goldman, who is not a Town Meeting member. "The purpose here is to raise awareness and hopefully receive public support for this." Goldman's article discourages parents and caregivers from spanking children, something he says can lead to more significant violence or to difficulty in disciplining older children and adolescents.
