6-year-old spanked to death with a piece of wood, Rene Stutzman, Orlando Sentinel August 5, 2008

FLORIDA - A Seminole County grand jury today indicted a 49-year-old man on a first-degree murder charge in the death of his six-year-old nephew.

Tony Gale Gonsoulin, who lives near Apopka, also was indicted on a charge of aggravated child abuse.

His nephew, Cameron Palmer, died July 4, one day after the boy suffered severe head and other injuries.

Witnesses told sheriff's office investigators that Gonsoulin disciplined the boy July 3, angry that someone had broken a computer.

He struck the boy with a piece of wood when spanking him with his hand didn't make the child cry, Gonsoulin told authorities, according to court records.

Gonsoulin told investigators the boy injured himself when he slipped on a wet bathroom floor and fell.

The boy and his two brothers were spending the summer with Gonsoulin, a sign painter.
