Secretary Roderick Bremby of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment suspended the license of Mary Ellen Hagemaier and her day care home at 2232 Green Avenue in Manhattan.

State officials have shut down a Manhattan day-care center as investigators look into charges of excessive and inappropriate spanking and cursing to discipline infant children.

Secretary Roderick Bremby of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment suspended the license of Mary Ellen Hagemaier and her day care home at 2232 Green Avenue in Manhattan. Bremby says Hagemaier has violated regulations before and failed to complete a training program ordered by the KDHE.

A regional administrator recommended that an emergency suspension go into effect while an investigation is concluded.
