National Association for the Education of Young Children: Prohibit corporal punishment in schools and all other programs for children
Excerpt from NAEYC Position Statement, "Violence in the Lives of Children," adopted July 1993.

Prohibit corporal punishment in schools and all other programs for children.
Numerous states continue to permit corporal punishment in schools or child care programs. Some states that prohibit corporal punishment in standards for licensing child care programs allow exemptions for certain types of programs or under certain conditions. The institutional use of corporal punishment in such situations teaches children that physical solutions to problems are acceptable for adults and that aggression is an appropriate way to control the behavior of other people. The institutional use of corporal punishment should never be condoned.
