Who should receive this message?
Cards should be disseminated mainly in the paddling states. Ideally, they should go to several parties in the same office so that recipients are aware that colleagues also received them. That makes them harder to ignore. Of course, most cards will be tossed immediately, but the implications of its message won't be forgotten. There will be talk, some arguing perhaps and, most importantly, some serious thinking. Mail to education committees of the state legislatures in the 22 paddling states, to members of those state's boards of education, to states' superintendents of education, to parents' associations and teachers' associations, to department heads in the teachers' colleges, to pediatricians, to children's hospitals, to state governors, to mayors, to city council members, to newspaper and magazine editors, to family court judges, to juvenile justice authorities, to the various state government agencies that deal with children's issues, public health issues, mental health issues, etc. Don't hesitate to enlarge this list. When an incident involving school corporal punishment breaks into the news, make that community the beneficiary of a mailing. A quick search of the Web will produce physical mailing addresses, email addresses and fax numbers --all you need. With your participation, the silence will finally be broken. If you can only send a few cards, send them. If you can only send one, send it. One card in the hands of the right reader may serve to protect one child, and that benefits us all. If you are concerned that paddlers who feel exposed or threatened by your activism will attempt to intimidate you by retaliating against your children or by trying to undermine your employment, we understand that. We've seen it happen. Send names and addresses where cards should be sent, and we'll do it without identifying you. Email the information to riak@nospank.net or snailmail it to PTAVE, P.O. box 1033, Alamo, CA 94507.
